Barbara Smithson
1929-2010
On Monday 2nd August, we said “Good Bye” to Barbara in Church. Apart from the first six months of her life, she was York through and through. But she was always doing things for others, that is the one trait of hers that stands out above all others. I never knew that she had only taken up teaching at the age of 40. But I did know of her skills as a needlewoman, and the Millennium Banner will be All Saints’ lasting memorial to her. Revd. Allan Hughes in his address at the funeral service described her as, “A Christian lady of deep faith, her life was a sermon in action”. And most of the congregation will remember those fiendishly
difficult Annual Quizzes she did - even with the answers in front of me, I still did not understand most of them! I can find no better way of finishing this little tribute to Barbara, than to print the last paragraph of Allan’s eulogy: -
“Barbara... On behalf of your immediate family, who loved you so much, and with good cause, and on behalf of your extended family here from church and organisations beyond, can I say we were lucky to have had you. We thank God for your special life; may angels come hastening to your aid, may you rest in peace and may light perpetual shine upon you! Amen.”
