A Private Man’s Progress

Yes, progress is being made. I am led to believe that 25 people registered an interest in our vacant City Centre Ministry Post, and asked that the dossier be sent to them. And eight actually applied to be considered for the post. These will now be sifted down to around four, and these candidates will be called to York for interview in early July. They will be in York for 2 days, because two things have to be resolved. One that they want to come to us, and two, we actually want one of them to join us.

The procedure for the appointment of Clergy to livings in the Church of England has been developed over centuries, and it is very much a 2-way process. It is to be hoped that one of the eight will “fit the bill”, but as yet, which one of those eight private individuals it will be, is of course still to

be determined.

Openers and Closers

James Finlay, one of our Churchwardens, sent me the following message as an e-mail: - Locking and Unlocking the Church

We endeavour to ensure that the Church is open for visitors throughout the year, and this requires someone to unlock and lock each day, except on Sundays.

We now need assistance with this ministry. Would any member of the congregation ether be willing and able to take on this important task, or to assist with it?

Alternatively does anyone know of any suitable and reliable person, who might be able to assist? If so please contact one of the Churchwardens or the Treasurer,

for further information.

Over to you then, come and join the team.

A Dog’s Life

I have never had a dog at home before, but there is one now! How has that happened? When there is a household with a couple, three children & three dogs, well, things get err, full. So the suggestion was made that we should have the 8-year old female Staffordshire [ordinary, not terrier], rather than send her to the Dog’s Home. So on Mon 19th

April she came to live with us. And we all got on instantly, the dog, my lodger and I. Living close to Hob Moor is absolutely ideal for a dog owner to take it for walks. But to find out what she likes to eat, and how much, is very

much trial & error; and fun. She does not like fish or chocolate, surprisingly. But anything else goes, literally. All makes of meaty dog food go down, cereals, treats, chews, anything. But those small pouches are no use to her, she needs full sized tins! We have never had much in

the way of left-overs, but the last bits of stews and curries are simply wolfed down! A friend knows a dog who is nick-named Dyson. Well that can definitely apply just as well to Kara! Happy days.

Let Your Light Shine

If you have been around Church after dark in the last few months, you would have noticed that the Tower was not illuminated from the outside. This was due to some faulty wiring, and some of the uplighters getting water inside them. Well these have now all been rectified, and All

Saints is once again shining out every evening.

Fund Raising Topics

Our Treasurer, Ken Hovington, has reported that during April the Collections at Services brought in £1,044, while the Offertory Box realised £229. The Collections are high because they included the Freeman’s Guild Service, which came to £230, as well as all the Services over Easter.

Fairtrade continues each month, usually on a third Sunday morning. The year’s second St. Crux All Day will be on Sat 26th June. So any offers of help, or produce or articles for sale, to Pauline Hovington, please.

We are still collecting 5p pieces. So if you arrive at Church with a few in your pocket or purse, hand them to the Sidesmen; and they will get them into the collecting jar for you. Once again, many thanks for all your efforts.

Churches Together in York

Churches Together in York continues to function, but we only receive one paper copy of their information. So it is difficult to publicise their events to you all. Their A.G.M. is on Thur 10th June, in the Main Hall of the U.R.C. Church

in Priory Street. There are two presentations after the formal Meeting, one by Christians Against Poverty, and the other by Street Angels, York. I will copy the Notice, and leave a few copies in Church for those interested.

  Editor’s Ramblings

Just after the April issue, appeared, I re-started my seasonal work of planning Weedspraying Trains on the Railway. This averages out at three days per week,. But more significantly, it is the same type of work as preparing the Lantern - that is working on a computer. So after a day of that, I am not going to be able to start work on the Lantern on arrival home. So this issue is a two-monther, just like last year, and has been edited over the Late Spring Holiday weekend. I forecast that the work will last until mid-July, so an August issue should be produced at the normal time. Watch this space!

As always, enjoy your read.
